Izal Waz was a fairly promising student at the Jedi Academy. That is, until he became addicted to salt, a drug-like substance to the Arcona. Izal left the academy to support his habit. As proof that the Force works in mysterious ways, Izal later came into contact with the Jedi Knight Eelysa. She was working in deep cover to disrupt the Yuuzhan Vong's plan of conquest. She gave Izal a second chance to kick his addiction & concentrate on his Jedi studies. Izal became the gunner aboard the Jolly Man, the flagship of Saba Sebatyne's Wild Knights Squadron. He helped secure passage aboard the Millennium Falcon from Corellia with the Barabels & the recuperating Eelysa. He developed the "glowball" technique: a Jedi draws light around him-, her-, or itself to create a glowing "smoke screen" to confuse enemies. Izal helped the Knightz & Danni Quee research yammosks & how they communicate in order to find a way to disrupt the Vong's orchestrated battle discipline.
